Back in May 2007, the Montreal Canadiens organization launched the Goal is Green program with the objective of positioning the club as a leader in terms of environmental management and sustainable development among all professional sports franchises. Thanks to National Bank, the program's new presenting partner, this ambitious project is set to expand even further.
The Goal is Green was initially introduced as part of the franchise's 100th anniversary before becoming an initiative of its own with specific objectives. Its mission was described as follows:
"Make the Montreal Canadiens a leader on the ice and in the community through programs aimed at reducing its environmental footprint by going green and adapt its practices and resources towards an environmental change and encourage its important fan base to follow in its footsteps, on both social and environmental fronts."
The organization's green initiatives fall into, but are not limited to, five main areas: waste management, sustainable building, urban biodiversity, sustainable public transport, and sustainable communities. These enable us to actively contribute to achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals.
